About the Project

The Barchet Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Barchet name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Barchet name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Barchet's), by time period (18th Century Barchet's), or by topic (Barchet DNA, Barchet Occupations, Barchet Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Research Pages

Here are some of the current research pages included in the study. I'll be working on them, and could use your help! The article shown below is something I have been working on with a cousin. I'm still looking for source citations that proves this information.

  • The origin of the family name Barchet

The family name Barchet is a so-called professional surname, because it was originally derived from the profession of the brook weaver. This was practiced a lot in the period after the Middle Ages, when the surnames were created, as it promised a certain prosperity. Barchent, from the Arabic Barrakan for cloth garment, was introduced from the Mediterranean to Central Europe in the 14th century and made into a blend of linen (warp) and cotton (weft). This product was more skin-friendly than linen, lighter in weight and easier to dye. Because of these properties, it soon became a major competitor for fabrics made of wool and linen and for mass-produced clothing, bed and upholstery fabrics. The centers of German bristle weaving were mainly in Ulm, Augsburg, Nuremberg and Constance. However, the so-called “Gäuweber” in the rural villages were also of considerable importance. There were seals for the bales of fabric that stated the quality of the finished woven bale of fabric. In Constance it was z. B. Descending ox, lion, grape and monk. As for the bearers of the name and their distribution, a Hermann Barchentweber is mentioned in Schwäbisch Gmünd around 1445, so he still bears the full professional name. It is different with a Hans Barchet 1550 in Überlingen near Konstanz on Lake Constance. The first Hans Barchet is mentioned in Gussenstadt in 1590, he was also a weaver. Unfortunately, the parents are unknown, but maybe there is a connection between Han Barchet from Überlingen and Hans Barchet from Gussenstadt, since there are only 40 years in between and at that time the spelling of the vowel has often changed. Unfortunately, there will be no certainty about this until further details are known.
